Interview with Jon
From Pussy.Org Interview
1-Can you tell our affiliates how you got started ?
I
had already begun making websites (Warez ones..cough… J)
at 14. Seeing how many people could visit your website was very exciting and
inspiring. I first got the change to run pussy.org on behalf of someone else at
age 16. At the time I thought I had two options. Either make a site about cats
or women. I think its safe to say I made the right choice! I had already
experimented with a few adult PPC sponsors. There was a particularly good one
that was paying 21c / click on warez sites and I was bringing in $150 a week.
Those were the days J
After 3 years we acquired the site and went from strength to strength!
2- What
is the most important thing for you in an Adult
webmaster Affiliate Program ?
Very
simple. Good content, good tools, and flexibility. The content should be fresh
and unique. There should be several promotion options too. I am amazed how many
sponsors these days still only offer PPS, or worse offer revshare with increased
percentage for dialers and popups. I mean seriously this is 2008. Guard your
users with your life. Don't give them a fuc@%&# dialer! RSS feeds for
galleries are useful but very few sponsors offer these, RSS blog feeds are not
that useful J
Only in the last years did sponsors really get with the times and offer
descriptions.
Oh
before I forget, for all those sponsors that think having 10x templates for the
same videos is smart to get more exposure, its not. Its bad and its noticed.
Don't do it, make more videos instead! Then you might get more sales!
3-
Are trade shows still relevant for Webmasters?
Sure.
As with all shows there is lots of time wasted at these things. Lots of
webmasters think the shows are a waste of time, and lots of webmasters think the
shows are important to do business. Both are wrong. The shows are a great way to
put names to faces and sometimes
improve business relations. But be prepared for it to go the other way too. That
said, despite all the time wasting that does happen,
someone introduces you to someone else or says something to you that can
dramatically change the way you operate your business. For this reason alone,
the shows ARE worth it. New things are always learnt.
4-
Rev Share or PPS ?
As
with everything in life there is no black and white answer to this question.
Every sponsor varies. Some sponsors do well without trials and have high
retension rates. In this case revshare is always the way to go. Others only
offer trials and get many trial joins but hardly any full joins, in which PPS is
the way to go. The best thing to do is make an educated guess. Monitor stats
remote for a few months (and yes, save the history, data is important, what do
you think Google does all day?) and then figure out what your average
"PPS" actually is. Then you can switch some sponsors either way and
increase your profits. Another good trick is to turn your very small sponsors to
PPS for extra cash flow. Last but not least, specifically we go revshare for AFF
and PPS for cams, but I know many will disagree with that one.
5-
What are the biggest challenges the industry in currently facing ?
Should
I be boring and mention the tube sites? No? Ok then I'll mention the tube sites
instead. Ive said it before and I'll say it again. This is the beginning of the
end. You don't have to believe me, but from someone that extended family deep in
the music industry and watching the drastic changes that have gone in behind the
scenes in that industry, I can assure you that if a clear monitisation model is
not found for tube sites (that is NOT AFF or cams!), then the product of adult
will be continued to be devalued and sales will get less and less. I've heard
too many people say that "oh people said it about TGPs but they were
wrong", well they were wrong, but they are not now. Tubes have NOTHING TO
SELL. Amateur submitted content cannot be sold, there is no 2257, and paysite
sales are not going to happen w hen you have hour long videos in front of you.
TGPs never removed clips, they just gave more available. One thing that is very
interesting about the adult industry as well is that there is no clear exit
strategy. Cash is so immediate that people don't really think to acquire
websites. Also valuations are much lower than the mainstream bubble. I think
that this will only get worse as confidence in the paysite model weakens. What
is ceratin is that Google is not going to be at the finish line waiting to buy
YouPorn like they did with YouTube! Unfortunately tubes are here now, so we have
2 challenges. How to join them, and how to do it without loosing money like all
of them.
The
other big challenge we face is to avoid people at conferences that say they
offer mobile billing. These people are the devil. Don't get caught J
6-
If you where starting a pay site what would be the first move you would make ?
Partner
with someone that knows what they are doing J
No problably I would come up with the concept. Define the brand, buy NATS,
modify NATS so it works properly, arrange some content shootings, prepare all
the necessary webmaster tools and then start badgering people. Isn't that what
everyone else does? These days though trying to come up with a niche is d
ifficult. When I see new "Gay Asian Anime" galleries in my email some
days I do scratch my head and wonder whatever will be next!!
7-
Traffic or Content ??
Try
and get as much traffic as you can without
jeopardising your business model!
8-
What's the best Advice you've ever gotten ?
Don't
look at your competitors, just stay ahead of them and then what they do is
irrelevant. Oh that and "those who do not succeed run the risk of
failure" by Mr Bush
9-
Who do you look up to in the Adult industry ?
Brazzers
– they are doing great things. Other than that, you guys and Pichunter J
10-
What would be Pussy.Org Legacy ?
I
guess to continue to pioneer the adult industry free site market? All for pussy
and one for all!!
