Cover Models Trend the New Black
The New Black
When Lucire, a fashion magazine, launched as a print edition in October
2004 with a black model on the cover, its publishers did not know that it
would kick off a trend Down Under.

Since then, Lucire has published one more edition with a model of African
descent on its cover, shot on Coney Island. One week after its second print
issue hit the newsstand, competitor Style magazine followed with a black model.
Lucire publisher Jack Yan says that he has heard from numerous people commenting
on the Style cover, and did not even consider that he and his team might have
started a trend till that happened.

Colour Blind Policy
'It does seem that two mainstream magazines here have featured more black models
in the last couple of months than we might expect to see from a whole year's
output from two similar titles in some other countries,' he says.
Despite this awareness, he does not see why there should be a fuss. 'We adopt a
"colour-blind" policy when it comes to choosing our covers. The first
two months, the best cover shots happened to have featured black models,'
recalls Mr Yan. 'Next month she might be yellow, white or something else.'
Eye Contact the Key
Mr Yan, who is Chinese, says that the main criterion for a Lucire cover, other
than the photograph being beautiful, is eye contact. Senior members of his team
make the decision with him. 'I know others might not work this way and make an
issue out of race,' he says. 'While we're not consciously making a stand with
our cover choices, we think it is important to say to our colleagues, "It's
not going to scare a reader if a cover model doesn't have the same skin colour
as her."
'I'm delighted that both Lucire and Style have a black model on the cover, and
trust that our competitor made its choice using a similar colour-blind
approach,' he says.
