The report also found a dramatic increase in the number of women who said they had engaged in a lesbian relationship.found at http://www.int.iol.co.za/ About 11 percent of women aged between 18 and 44 said they have had a lesbian
sexual experience, up from six percent in a previous poll in 1992. In the 18 to
29 age group, 14 percent of women said they had engaged in lesbian sex. The number of adult males reporting homosexual relationships was around six percent - the same figure as in 1992. Researchers found that men age 30 to 44 have had a median of six to eight sexual partners in their lifetimes; while women's median was about four. Among both men and women age 15 to 44, about two-thirds have had only one sexual partner in the last year. Ten percent of men and seven percent of women have had three or more partners in that time. The survey also found that 93 percent of wives and 92 percent of husbands said they had been faithful during the previous 12 months. The study was conducted by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention's National Centre for Health Statistics, which used 200 female researchers to survey 12 571 men and women aged 15 to 44 in person during 2002 and 2003.
The survey found that among teens aged 15 to 19, 55 percent of males and 54 percent of females had engaged in oral sex, rising to nearly 70 percent for those who are 18 and 19. Fifty-three percent of girls 15 to 19 and 49 percent of boys reported that they have had full intercourse. The parity between the sexes represented a significant evolution in social attitudes, according to James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a reproductive health organisation in Washington. He told the Los Angeles Times that the study showed that society was undergoing a social transition, with women and girls becoming more sexually confident. "It calls into question the stereotype of boys as hunters and girls as prey," he said. "Something going on here is creating more balance between the sexes than we have seen before." But other experts warned that the teen reliance on oral sex to avoid sexually transmitted diseases could backfire. Only nine percent reported using a condom during sexual activities despite studies that have shown that gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes and human papilloma virus can be transmitted through oral sex. "They have not been given a strong enough message about the health risks of oral sex," said Dr Claire Brindis of the University of California at San Francisco. Other researchers said the conservative government's emphasis on sexual abstinence rather than education about healthy sexual practices contributed to this danger. "Nobody really knows what the causes of high levels of oral sex are," said Dr Marvin Belzer, a specialist in adolescent medicine at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. "The bigger issue is, as a society, as parents, as physicians, we do not adequately train our kids about healthy sexuality. The messages they get are from each other, and they are often unhealthy." - Sapa-dpa
