LESBIAN SUPER-CLUB COMING   by Cara Davis

Sydney’s lesbian social scene will be transformed next year with the opening of a full-time girls’ bar in the city.

The team from UK lesbian super-club Candy Bar will visit Sydney in January to secure a venue, Candy Bar founder Kim Lucas told Sydney Star Observer.

Candy Bar Sydney, which is due to open in late 2008, is expected to join its sister bars, Candy Bar Soho and Candy Bar Brighton, in becoming one of the world’s best-known lesbian venues.

The organisers of Sydney’s lesbian events will be collaborating with Candy Bar in the lead-up to the Sydney opening.

Stephen Craddock from Slide’s girls’ night Cherry has announced a partnership with Candy Bar, and Middle Bar’s Bitch has been invited to tour the UK bars with drag king Sexy Galexy and DJ Renee Stanton this month.

Bitch founder Renee Schembri said Candy Bar Sydney was expected to operate four to five nights a week.

“I believe there is potential here in Sydney for a permanent girls’ night to work,” she said.

Craddock, who has just returned from a month in Europe, said there were some “very exciting times” ahead.

“There are so many options for girls in Europe,” he said, “especially in London, Paris and Madrid, with seven-day-a-week bars and clubs all tailored for the girls.

“It’s definitely a sign of things to come in Australia.”

The question of whether a fully operational lesbian bar would be successful, however, has had Sydneysiders talking.

DJ Sveta said she would love a Sydney lesbian bar to work, “but I am just not sure that it would”.

“Lesbians stop going out really quickly,” she said. “There is a period from about 18 to 22 when they are out all the time, but then they stop and the next generation comes through.”

Leana McInnes, the producer of Lickalisious at Arq, said while some male clubs could afford to open seven days a week, a permanent girls’ bar would be less profitable.

“Girl’s don’t necessarily go out every night of the week,” she said. “The current girls’ nights sustain themselves because they are so unique.

“The Bank is different to the Sly Fox, which is different to Bitch, which is different again to what we do here once a month.”

The Candy Bars in Soho and Brighton have based their success on providing a vast range of spaces and entertainment options for the girls.

Candy Bar Soho, a three-level venue, has a cocktail bar, an upstairs pool lounge and a basement dance area.

Alex, 30, from Darlinghurst, said she would love to see a girls’ venue that wasn’t scared of showing “a bit of personality”.

“Let’s have a space that’s got a bit of class,” she said. “The first ever Fingers First at the W Bar came close in some ways in that it attracted women of various ages who weren’t scene queens.

“And you didn’t have to be E-ing off-chops or consuming copious amounts of alcohol to get through the night.”

Tell Candy Bar founder, Kim Lucas, how you want your Candy Bar to be, by filling out the questionnaire at www.thecandybar.co.uk.

Gary from Woolahra, that is such a load of bollocks, not to mention so stereotypical. Lots of lesbians go out on the scene. They're not all homebodies who spend lots of time with their pets. Whats wrong with women having a women-only venue? Men may be banned from this club? Like hello! It is a lesbian club. Majority of cities across America have lesbian-specific venues and why should Sydney be an exception?

It would be great if this club was successful over the long term. Unfortunately past experience has shown that women's clubs just don't seem to have enough sustanence to make it over the longer term.

This super club will be fantastic. Why? because the lesbian community and its ‘gay brothers’ will support it. Or do we want to shoot ourselves in the foot and destroy all that we create? Regardless of whether women go out or not people will go to the club because it is there. I am so excited by the range of possible shows that will be at the club and hope that it will involve something other than Drag Kings. Not only do women clubs struggle but also women in the arts. We have so much talent within the community that can not find a stage or audience to share their work with, just think of the possibilities!!!!! I hope people realises that the quotes in the article are merely opinions. It again reflects that lesbian lifestyle and habits are not documented so let’s move on and not give in to stereotypes of gay men partying all the time and lesbians staying at home. I would bet money that this generalisation will change once the super club is open and we are given a chance to party all week long. I say bring it on and I personally challenge everyone to help make this club work.

I'm sure it will not be women only. As the gay men of this community have, albeit begrudgingly at times, opened their doors to us, we will to them. I have more gay male friends than I could count and I would be very disappointed if exclusion were the case. It will just be really nice to have a club run by women who understand the demands of a very fickle lesbian crowd and a space we can call our own. This, I think that is the most important point because that is the only way that this venture will work, if we take ownership of our own space and support it. It's no good to just bitch about the fact that we don't have our own space and to then not support one when it does come along. I for one as an entertainer, a social butterfly and a strong supporter of women, am very excited to see this venue eventuate.

A dedicated venue to celebrate amazing lesbian talent in all its forms – drag kings, rock chicks, burlesque, amazing djs, and lots of gorgeous girls – bring it on! I’m a lesbian in my 30s AND I still go out! Girl power to Candy Bar Sydney.

The lesbian community in Sydney should have a social venue of its own, but sadly it will not work. I predict it will go broke and close its doors within six months. Even the late Dawn O'Donnell knew there was no money to be made in a full-time, seven day a week lesbian operational venue. Gay male-dominated venues work and prosper because gay men socialise differently to lesbians. Most lesbians are homebodies who rarely venture out on a regular basis to venues as gay men often do. Lesbians do not have the same spending patterns as gay men - a bar does not make money out of selling chilled water. A lesbian super-club in Sydney would not be a viable business or be able to carve out a niche for it's prosperity to survival. One-off night events can accommodate the small lesbian scene that wants to go out, but a seven day operation is simply not feasible in a restricted market place. Back in the late 70's when I was a pretty young lad the lesbian community were happy to mix with the gay boys. Come to think of it Chez Ivy's (a wine bar at Bondi -Junction) was two thirds full of beautiful butch lesbians having lots of fun. "Why are our lesbian sisters even attempting such a bold initiative"? My opinion may be quite clinical and get some lesbian community members in abit of a muck sweat, but when you have been around the gay scene for awhile like myself you tend to have a pragmatic approach to what works and what does'nt. But hey girls I love Colleen Hewitt as an entertainer, But not being of a lesbian characteristic I will not be able venture into this girl dominated venue and dance my tits off around the dance floor to Ms Hewitt. I will just have to go to a "packed" gay bar, where men are men and I will be busy, Gary Burns,

I am sorry, but where the hell do you get the idea it is women only? At no point has it been suggested men will be banned. This is exactly the kind of rumour and half-truths that get the queer community into trouble. Stop trying to read between the lines and accept what is there until more information is available. Our lesbian sisters have waited a long time for this opportunity - don't spoil it for them.

Isn't this a bit rich...why can't men have an official men only bar in Sydney, but women are allowed to do so?. Isn't this a gross double standard. The anti-discrimination board should step in as they did when lesbians complained about some gay bar along Oxford street when they try to maintain a men majority venue!

Submitted by Gwen, from Tempe,on the 2/08/2007 5:50:33 PM

I guess men will be banned (as usual) and straight women welcomed with open arms.

This is really going to change the dynamic of going clubbing in Sydney . It will be interesting to see how the club fares. I for one hope it is a success. Anything to bring greater diversity and option to the Sydney queer community is worth embracing and supporting
